The Old Tiger Stadium Conservancy
The Old Tiger Stadium’s mission statement is as follows:
Historically old ballparks have been demolished after Major League teams move. The Old
Tiger Stadium Conservancy believes there is inherent economic development value in Tiger
Stadium’s contributions to the social history of Detroit and the development of the game of
baseball. The Old Tiger Stadium’s mission is to preserve, re-develop, and program Tiger
Stadium as a public park, youth sports venue, and destination for baseball fans in a
practical and economically viable manner to both honor the site’s history and create value
for the surrounding neighborhood and the city of Detroit.
Until the Conservancy’s founding, the staffs of the Greater Corktown Development
Corporation and the Corktown Citizens District Council were responsible for
advancing the neighborhood’s priorities. In June 2006, the city of Detroit and the
Detroit Economic Growth Corporation announced they would move forward with the
“Corktown Plan.” At that point, Greater Corktown established the Conservancy to
advance the project. The Conservancy and the DEGC are currently operating under
a nine-page Memorandum of Understanding. The Conservancy and the DEGC are
working toward finalizing a development agreement. The Old Tiger Stadium
Conservancy remains confident that agreement will be completed.
The Old Tiger Stadium Conservancy
During the year before the Tigers’ move to
Comerica Park, Zachary and Associates
(contracted by the city of Detroit) facilitated
a series of stakeholder meetings to identify
priorities for Tiger Stadium’s re-development.
Three conceptual goals emerged from that
process and continue to have community
support: preserve the field as a recreation
facility and public green space, mixed-use
development surrounding the field to
enhance “Main Street” goals for Michigan
Avenue, and if practical preserve
elements
of the historic stadium’s
structure. The Old
Tiger Stadium
Conservancy has developed
a plan that
aims to meet all three goals.
